Dogs operate in shifts Deployed for detection of explosives NEW DELHI: The Central Industrial Security Force, which is in charge of security at Indira Gandhi International Airport here, has roped in four more sniffer dogs to help its personnel in protecting vital installations. With this the number of canines in the CISF dog squad has risen to six. “We started out with two dogs about six months ago. We have got four more after they completed their training. It was a phase-wise addition,” airport sources said on Friday. The dogs -- all Labradors -- were duly trained at Army RVC Centre and College, Meerut Cantonment, and an Indo-Tibetan Border Police training centre at Bhanu in Haryana. Patrols at airportsThe dog squad has been pressed into service for regular patrolling at the international and domestic terminals of the airport. The six canines operate in shifts and are deployed daily for detection of explosives. They are also being taken to the Haj terminal, especially in anticipation of a great rush of pilgrims who will start coming back to the country in a couple of days. “At all the important airports of the country the CISF has been asked to raise its own dog squad rather than depending on others. There are situations when we immediately require the services of these animals and so having our own dogs will certainly help,” sources added. The CISF took over the security of Delhi airport in April 2003. Besides Indira Gandhi International Airport, the CISF also manages security at Tirupati, Jammu and Kashmir, Indore and other airports in the country.
