KOCHI: The Kumbalanghi grama panchayat, along with the Ernakulam district administration, will hold the four-day Kumbalanghi tourism fest from December 29. This is part of showcasing Kumbalanghi, one of the 15 global tourism villages featured in the Incredible !ndia campaign, to tourists. At a press conference here on Friday, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said this year’s fest would be part of the ongoing Grand Kerala Shopping Festival. Fisheries Minister S. Sarma will inaugurate it at the St. Peter’s School ground. C.M. Dinesh Mani, MLA, will preside. K.V. Thomas, MLA and resident of Kumbalanghi, will be chief guest. Mayor Mercy Williams will inaugurate an exhibition and a food festival at the tourism park. Traditional cuisine of Kumbalanghi will be the main attraction at the food festival. Other highlights of the day will be a musical programme by Kalabhavan and a cross-country race. Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will inaugurate a boat race on the Kallanchery backwater the next day. Mr. Mani will flag off the race. Panchayat president John Pazheri will preside. Chavittunatakom will be staged at the tourism park. District panchayat president P.S. Shyla will inaugurate a tourism seminar on December 31 at the Sree Narayana auditorium. Industries Secretary T. Balakrishnan will deliver the keynote address. Panchayat vice-president Salila James will preside. Important personalities and retired teachers from Kumbalanghi will be honoured the same day. Sebastian Paul, MP, will inaugurate the function. This will be followed by a performance of traditional art forms. Fire works will illuminate the sky over Kumbalanghi at midnight, marking the dawn of New Year. City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham will inaugurate a tourism rally on January 1. This will be followed by a public meeting, which Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will inaugurate at the St. Joseph’s School ground. Cultural and sporting events will begin two days prior to the inauguration of the festival. The last day will witness a slew of colourful events, including a mega show as part of the shopping festival, a gana mela by the Idea Star Singer group, a mimics parade by Sajan Palluruthy and cinematic dance.
