KOCHI: P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, said here on Friday that the university was yet to take a final decision on opening regional centres in the country. Delivering the inaugural address at a function to felicitate V.K. Beeran, senior lawyer, who has been nominated to the Aligarh Muslim University Court, Dr. Azis said a report by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development on ensuring participation of minorities in the higher education sector did not contain a specific proposal for opening regional centres. Dr. Azis said the Aligarh Muslim University Court and executive council had supported the initiative to broaden the scope of higher education for minorities in the country. They had decided that trusts, private groups or any agency with a profit motive would not be allowed to open regional centres. Pointing out that the Chief Secretary had sent a letter expressing the State’s interest to set up a centre, Dr. Azis said the government had promised land for the project. He said the university Act did not permit starting regional or any other centre outside the 25-kilometre vicinity of the central campus.
