S. Vijay Kumar

The city and district police are preparing to counter emergencies that may arise in the event of a flood situation in Madurai.

An elaborate contingency plan has been drawn in close coordination with the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department, Madurai Corporation and district administration.

Several teams of trained police personnel equipped with relief and rescue materials have been deployed at flood-prone localities. Round-the-clock vigil is being maintained along the bridges across the Vaigai river, particularly the Kuruvikkaran Bridge, Kalpalam and three causeways at Ramarayar Mandapam, Obulapadithurai and Aruldosspuram.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) R. Ramrajan, 11 patrol vehicles are positioned at vulnerable points.

A team of policemen trained in rescue operations has been kept ready at the Armed Reserve.

“Sellur, K. Pudur and their adjoining areas are prone to floods. Besides fibre boats, rubber rings and suction motor pumps, we also have a couple of inflatable tower lights that can cover a radius of 500 metres. We are also coordinating with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials to prevent damage or loss of life in the event of live wires getting snapped.”

In a meeting held at the Collectorate on flood management, senior police officials were briefed about the arrangements made by the Revenue Department and local bodies.

Flood management teams have also been formed in all the seven sub-divisions in Madurai district. Officers in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police were in charge of each team, police sources said and added that companies of the Tamil Nadu Special Police (Sixth Battalion) were ready for any exigency.
