Staff Reporter

Featuring the legends of the industry in India

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit released a book on the construction industry titled “Legends of the Construction Industry” at India Habitant Centre here on Friday.

Published by the Builders’ Association of India, the book features some prominent personalities including the founder of Hindustan Construction Co. Ltd., Seth Walchand Hirachand, who is aptly described as the father of the Indian construction industry; creator of New Delhi Sir Sobha Singh, who was the main contractor for construction of North Block and South Block; and the founder of Shah Construction Co., H. J. Shah, who rendered useful service to BAI as its president from 1959 to 1961.

BAI president P. R. Mundle said: “Sky-scrapers and towers today show the height of perfection achieved by construction companies in the country. Some of the towering personalities who have contributed to this success figure in this unique publication. These individuals not only helped in building up this crucial industry, but have also made forays into different segments of construction activity, changing the face of the industry and contours of business. Their vision as well as mission to take the Indian construction industry to a global level is paying off. No wonder they are called the legends of the Indian construction industry.”

Mr. Mundle said the book also throws new light on how this miniature construction business turned into a grand industry. “The book narrates the ups and downs, trials and tribulations, moments of glory and disappointment, triumph and trauma and survival.”
