“3.2 lakh encroachments removed”

The number of sites encroached is about 10 lakh


CHENNAI: About 3.2 lakh encroachments on public lands have been removed by authorities, Revenue Minister I. Periasamy said on Wednesday.

Totally, the number of sites encroached was about 10 lakh. With regard to tanks, there were 3.75 lakh encroachments, of which nearly one-third had been removed. The authorities were taking steps for removing unauthorised occupants from lakes in and around Chennai. As regards those living on the banks of Chennai waterways, alternative sites would be provided to such dwellers, the Minister said. At a function to mark the 150th anniversary of the Survey and Land Records department, the Minister inaugurated the digitatisation of field measurement sketches in 29 districts. The cost of the work was Rs.8.86 crore.
