Kakinada: The Yanam People’s Festival will be held from January 6 to 8. It is an annual event which brings people of different hues and cultures together, organised by the Tourism Department of Government of Pondicherry at GMC Balayogi Grounds. Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao is supervising the arrangements for the cultural extravaganza which is aimed at promoting Yanam, one of the earliest Colonial settlements in India, as a tourist destination. In addition to regular items on the agenda, songs competition will be held on January 6 and a dance competition the next day. Glamour touchSeveral actors of the Tollywood are being roped in to give a glamour touch to the three-day festival. Yanam is one of the three administrative regions of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Karaikal and Mahe are the other two entities. The Yanam Festival is celebrated every year to cherish the memories of the past when the French, British and the Portuguese had occupied this small place which is surrounded by East Godavart district. It is also aimed at protecting the rich heritage and tap its immense tourism potential. Sri Potti Sri Ramulu bridge, Rajeev Gandhi beach, ‘Venkanna Babu’ temple, St. Anns Catholic Church and Ferry Road are some of the best tourist spots.
