Skin diseases chronic in AIDS patients, say experts

BERHAMPUR: Increase in HIV infection has increased challenges before dermatologists and venereologists, opined experts at the inaugural session of the conference of the Orissa unit of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists & Leprologists (IADVL).

The two-day conference was inaugurated at the MKCG Medical college campus on Saturday. The first day of the conference was totally dedicated to sessions on HIV/AIDS in collaboration with the Orissa State AIDS Control Society (OSACS). Prof. R.N. Dutta and Bibhuti Saha from the Art School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata were the guest speakers along with joint director of OSACS, Annapurna Mishra. Organising secretary of the conference, Satyadarshi Patnaik said their faculty of medical science is conscious about HIV/AIDS as HIV infection has been associated with cutaneous diseases since it was first described with Kaposi’s sarcoma as a diagnostic criterion. The experts attending the conference said several skin diseases were more prevalent in HIV infected persons and also tend to be more severe and chronic in these patients. Severe cutaneous disorders related to fungal and viral infections are associated with HIV infection. The attending dermatologists were advised to extra vigilant while dealing with severe cases of cutaneous disorders like oral thrush, dermatitis as it may be related to HIV infection.
