Fast of Ganjam bar members continues Wide support to the demand claimed BERHAMPUR: Several MLAs and two MPs of Ganjam district declared to support the agitation of the Ganjam Bar Association for the establishment of a permanent bench of the Orissa High Court in the city for south Orissa.A team of six MLAs attended a meeting called by the action committee of the Ganjam Bar Association on Saturday. They included Berhampur MLA R.C.C.Patnaik, Chatrapur MLA N.Narayan Reddy, Chikiti MLA Usha Devi, Bhanjanagar MLA Bikram Keshari Arukh, Aska MLA Saroj Padhi and Kavisuryanagar MLA Ladukishore Swain. Representatives of all bar associations in the district also attended this meeting chaired by the president of the action committee, S.C.Rath. Speaking at the meeting, Ms Padhi said through a telephonic conversation with her, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik promised to take every possible step to make establishment of High Court benches a reality. Through their messages the Berhampur MP, Chandrasekhar Sahu and Aska MP Harihar Swain also expressed their solidarity with the agitation for a High Court bench in the city, said secretary of the Ganjam bar association, Manoj Patnaik. Through the representatives of the Khemundi Bar Association, State Cabinet Minister Suryanarayan Patro also supported the agitation, it was said. According to the president of the Ganjam bar association, Sudhansu Panda, all elected representatives have also promised to take part in the continuing agitation of the lawyers in future. It was decided to start a letter campaign and send 20,000 postcards from different parts of the district in support of the demand for the High Court bench to Supreme Court, Central Law Ministry and Orissa High Court. Members of all bar associations of the district also decided to continue with their cease work agitation. To increase public awareness regarding the demand street corner meetings would be held through out the district. For the past 19 days, members of the Ganjam bar have been on indefinite strike demanding High Court bench. The Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court rejected the request of Chief Minister regarding establishment of benches of the high court in Berhampur and Sambalpur. The lawyers of Cuttack bar association had also held strike opposing demand for high court benches in other parts of the state.
