CHENNAI: The Tamil Isai Sangam on Friday conferred the title of ‘Isaiperaringnar’ on Saidai Thevaram D. Natarajan on the occasion of its 65th annual Tamil Isai Festival.

The honour was in recognition of his services to the cause of Tamil music. The title carried a citation, medallion, shawl and Rs. 10,000.

Conferring the title, Sri Santhalinga Ramasamy of Peroor Atheenam, said Tamil music should be protected and promoted. Explaining the richness of the music and how it brought about a change in people, he stressed the need for propagating it, especially in rural areas, and integrating it with life. While music was spreading to foreign countries, it was not so in Tamil Nadu. The importance and the message contained in the music should reach youngsters. ‘Oduvars’ should be honoured for their services, he added. He distributed prizes to winners of competitions.

Chairman of the Law Commission and Sangam vice-president A.R. Lakshmanan said Tamil music was ancient and Sangam literature spoke about it. He complimented the Tamil Isai Sangam for its efforts to propagate music.

Sangam president P.R. Gokulakrishnan said Tamil music should be made part of the curriculum. Secretary A.C. Muthiah spoke.
