CHENNAI: The mass rendering of Thyagaraja’s “Pancharatna Kritis” by musicians, set the stage on Friday for the third edition of “Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaru” — a music festival that aspires to be the next best experience to participating in the annual Thyagaraja homage in Thanjavur.

A series of 26 concerts has been packed into the five-day festival of vocal and instrumental music (December 21-25) that will showcase the skills of established musicians and young talents.

“Chennayil Thiruvaiyaru” is a flagship event of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and a host of organisations such as Lakshman Sruthi Musicals, Kalalaya USA, Nataka Academy, Rotary Club of Madras Mount and Raj TV.

Veteran musician P. S. Narayanaswamy led the group rendition of “Pancharatna kritis” of saint Thyagaraja.

The array of musicians on stage included vocalists Sudha Raghunathan, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Haricharan, Vijay Shiva, P. Unnikrishnan, saxophone exponent Kadiri Gopalnath, flautist Shashank, (Guitar) Prasanna, and the violin duo of Lalitha-Nandhini and Kumaresh-Ganesh.

Organisers sought to recreate the mood of original homage that unfolds in January each year at the Thayagrajana Aradhanai Mandapam in Thiruvaiyaru by assembling a stage to accommodate 300 artistes and even distributed copies of the “Pancharatna kritis” to the audience.

K. M. Nair, SIDBI chief general manager, felicitated Mr. Narayanaswamy before the concert series got going with a veena recital by Rajesh Vaidhya. The festival will also feature a Harikatha segment by Aaravamudhachari and Bharathanatyam by Srikala Bharath.
