Naidu promises to waive loans of artisans
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday promised to waive all loans of artisans, apart from providing them fresh assistance at one per cent interest, if the party came to power in 2009.
He was addressing the party cadres after swearing in newly-appointed office-bearers of the BC cell led by M. Lakshminarayana and Puri Jagan, president and general secretary, respectively.
Mr. Naidu stated that the TDP would create a Rs.1,000-crore welfare fund for the weaker sections and would increase the corpus if necessary. Also, artisans would get equipment and tool kits at 50 per cent subsidy. These steps were just the beginning, he said, lambasting the Congress for not helping the weaker sections.
Polit Bureau member T. Devender Goud said the Backward Classes, specially the artisans, got a raw deal during the last three-and-a-half years of Congress rule. It was because they were generally known to support the TDP that the Congress was ‘taking revenge against the poor artisans’, he alleged.
