HYDERABAD: Sri Lanka has offered a life-size granite Buddha statue and a holy ‘dhamma’ bell in bronze to the State for installation at the Buddha ‘Vanam’, a tourism project being developed on 270 acres near Nagarjunasagar at a cost of Rs 16 crore. The Sri Lankan “gifts” will add to the spiritual status of the project. The offer was made by Mahindra Yapa Abey Wardana, Sri Lanka’s Minister for Cultural Affairs and National Heritage, during discussions with State Information and Tourism Minister A. Ramanarayan Reddy here on Saturday on developing identified Buddhist sites in the State. High-level delegationMr. Abey Wardana is heading a high-level Sri Lankan delegation on a visit of the State to identify areas co-operation for developing the Buddhist sites as tourism-cum-religious spots. Mr. Reddy told the delegation members that ties between Sri Lanka and Andhra Pradesh dated back to several decades. Through a video-show, he traced the State’s Buddhist background and highlighted the need for developing the sites as many of them came up on ‘stupas’, containing Buddha’s relics. M. K. Pathmanaathan, Sri Lanka’s Consul-General in Chennai, visited Nagarjuna Konda in the middle of the Nagarjunasagar reservoir on Friday. This was the second time that the Sri Lankan Government had deputed a team to the Buddhist sites. Speaking to reporters after discussions, Mr. Ramanarayan Reddy and Mr. Abey Wardana said they had identified 148 Buddhist sites in the State, which could be developed as Buddhist circuit with added tourist attractions and facilities. As part of the plan, the airport at Nagarjunasagar would be restored and refurbished. The Sri Lankan Government and the AP Tourism Development Corporation would soon sign an agreement on developing the Buddhist circuit and exchange of cultural teams.
