Special programmes for eight backward districts
Staff Reporter
Such as Perambalur, Madurai and Ramanthapuram State looking to achieve 100 per cent literacy by 2011 census
CHENNAI: The XI Plan period will have special programmes for the eight backward districts in the State, including Dharmapuri, Perambalur, Madurai and Ramanthapuram, said M. Naganathan, vice-chairman, State Planning Commission.
By the next census in 2011, the State would also have achieved 100 per cent literacy, he said. He released a textbook, ‘Health is Wealth’, for health assistants at a function organised by the Indian Centre for Research and Development of Community Education (ICRDCE) here recently . Stating that Tamil Nadu had done well compared to other States in the field of education because of the far-sighted policies of its leaders, Dr. Naganathan said. The private sector had also contributed significantly to the improvement in the education sector by setting up colleges, he added. Tamil Nadu Open University vice-chancellor M.S. Palanichamy said the four-year-old university offered 80 courses and had 1.09 lakh students.
The university, begun with the aim of imparting life skills to disadvantaged students, now had 18 diploma programmes and offered industrial training. He said the university was also trying for University Grants Commission’s recognition.
YRG Care chairman Sunithi Solomon, who received the first copy of the book, said Health Assistant course students must know how to handle people with AIDS, tuberculosis, and communicable diseases. She offered to train the students saying those who had trained in her centre had found jobs abroad.
ICRDCE director Xavier Alphonse said the Health Assistant programme was conducted in 106 colleges across the country and recognised by the TNOU.
He urged the university to consider providing credit transfer for students who wish to opt for a degree course.
