Rs. 4,624-crore worth projects in Mysore, Bangalore await Central nod

Nagesh Prabhu

BANGALORE: The Centre is yet to clear 20 projects formulated for Bangalore and Mysore estimated at a cost of Rs. 4,624.82 crore under its ambitious seven-year Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Two city corporations have been selected under the scheme to convert them into “world class” efficient and responsive cities.

Under the scheme, the Union Urban Development Ministry has approved a Rs. 22,536-crore City Development Plan (CDP) for Bangalore and Rs. 1,969-crore CDP for Mysore. While Bangalore has been grouped with other mega cities which have a population of over four million as Category ‘A’ cities, Mysore has been selected for its cultural and historical significance under Category ‘C’ cities. The Centre has cleared 40 projects estimated at Rs. 2,180.83 crore for Bangalore and five projects estimated at Rs. 423.38 crore for Mysore. But the progress of many of the projects has been tardy. Only one drinking water project (Rs. 16.15 crore) in Bangalore has been completed.

The Centre, State Government and civic bodies have to invest in the ratio of 35:15:50 for Bangalore, while it was 80:10:10 in the case of Mysore. Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation Limited is the nodal agency for the implementation of the scheme. The Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee, which is headed by the Urban Development Secretary, has not cleared 20 projects. Of the projects, four have been submitted by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), estimated at Rs. 436.35 crore. The projects are 63 arterial roads (Rs. 101. 50 crore), and three schemes to remodel stormwater drains in Byatarayanapura (Rs. 95.66 crore), Krishnarajapuram (Rs. 114.52 crore) and Rajarajeshwarinagar (Rs. 124.67 crore). The Centre’s share in these projects is Rs. 152.72 crore, according to official sources.

The sources said that the committee was yet to approve three road projects estimated at Rs. 241.80 crore of the Bangalore Development Authority. A proposal of the KSRTC to construct an inter-model transit centre at Peenya, estimated at Rs. 60.23 crore, had not been cleared. All theses projects were cleared by the State-level Steering Committee in August. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has prepared five project reports on four schemes — Cauvery Water Supply Scheme Stage IV, Phase II (Rs. 1049.90 crore); Integrated Water Management Reuse of Waste Water in the Vrishabhavathi Valley (Rs. 751.53 crore); sanitation schemes in Krishnarajapuram (Rs. 59.76 crore) and Mahadevapura limits (Rs. 112.54 crore); and unaccounted water scheme (Rs. 493.90 crore). All are pending before the Centre.
