FIGHTING FIT: Rear Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, reviewing the passing out parade of trainees at the Naval Academy at Ezhimala on Saturday. KANNUR: The passing out parade of the trainees of the fifth Naval Orientation Course was held at the naval base at Ezhimala here on Saturday. Chief of Staff of Southern Naval Command Rear Admiral Sunil Lanba reviewed the parade at the Parade Ground in the morning. As many as 99 trainee officers, including 23 women and six from the Coast Guard, completed their 20-week training at the academy and would now join naval warships for sea experience. The Coast Guard officers would undergo further training on board ships of the Coast Guard. The fifth course consisted of trainees in engineering, electrical, air traffic control, naval architecture, education, law, logistics and submarine cadre under the short service commission scheme and cadets under the Commission Worthy (technical) scheme. Addressing the trainees, Rear Admiral Lanba said training never stopped as the cadets grappled with the advanced technologies which the Navy possessed and operated very effectively. He called upon the trainees to place the interests of the nation above their own and live by core values. He said a world-class Naval Academy was being developed at Ezhimala. Commodore Suresh Laxman, Commanding Officer, INS Zamorin, was also present. Rear Admiral Lanba inspected a 19-man guard of honour and six platoons commanded by Sub-Lieutenant Mukesh Bhandari. The Admiral presented the ‘Overall Order of Merit’ award to cadet Ram Kishan. Sub-Lieutenant Saritha Nagayach received the Chief of the Naval Staff Trophy for the best woman trainee. The function was witnessed by parents of the trainees and serving and retired officers. The trainees marched past either side of the Quarter Deck to the tunes of slow march by the naval band. Having passed out from the portals of INS Zamorin, they assembled at the cadets mess where their parents and relatives, who had come from various parts of the country to witness the event, shipped Sub-Lieutenant’s stripes and Assistant Commandant’s stripes on the shoulders of their wards. The magazine ‘URU’ was released by Rear Admiral Lanba on the occasion. The training was to build up the physical and moral attributes required for uniformed personnel in general and the qualitative requisites for a naval officer in particular, a press release issued by the Academy said. The trainees had been given exposure to the academic and outdoor training relevant to the Navy, including camps, it added.
