U.S. court revokes bail of woman

New York: A U.S. court has allowed a wealthy India-born businessman Mahender Sabhnani, who along with his spouse was convicted of “modern day slavery,” to remain in home detention until his sentencing on March 28. The court, however, revoked the bail of his Indonesia-born wife Varsha Sabhnani.

Judge Arthur Spatt said he had taken the decision as Varsha was charged with torturing the two Indonesian women they had employed as housekeepers and Mahender was accused of allowing it to happen.

The couple were released on a $4.5 million bail with strict conditions under which their mansion was turned into a temporary jail and the Sabhnanis are to pay $10,000 a day for security to ensure that they did not escape. — PTI
