PATNA: The Lok Jan Shakti Party on Saturday extended its support to the CPI(M-L) in the by-election to the Bikramganj Lok Sabha constituency scheduled for December 29. Steel Minister and LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan said the parliamentary board took the decision to avoid the prevailing confusion about the party’s stand after it withdrew its candidate. CPI(M-L) general secretary Deepankar Bhattacharya had sought Mr. Paswan’s support for his candidate Arun Kumar Singh. Mr. Paswan said that though it might not be possible for him to campaign personally, his party workers would actively work for the CPI(M-L)’s success. He denied withdrawing his candidate under pressure from any quarter and attributed the decision to the objection raised by party workers against the candidate. He reiterated his stand of maintaining equidistance from the RJD and the NDA. Mr. Paswan spoke about returning the favour the CPI(ML) had extended to his party’s candidate Ranjan Prasad Yadav in the biennial election to the Rajya Sabha in 2006 but stressed that his party’s support to the latter was limited to this by-election. The LJP would contest the general election on its own strength.
