Damaged roads to be repaired

Tiruchi to get Rs.7 crore for relaying arterial roads

A loan-cum-grant of Rs.52 crore to be raised

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Corporation will carry out patch works on all rain-damaged roads on a war footing and has sought Rs.12 crore from the State Government for permanent repair of the damaged roads and drains.

Almost all city roads have suffered extensive damage with huge potholes posing a threat to road users at many places. Many of the newly laid roads have also suffered damages.

“Roads in all the four zones will be repaired temporarily and the work will commence from Monday,” Corporation Commissioner T.T. Balsamy told The Hindu. In places where widening of roads was under way, contractors executing the works have been asked to carry out the temporary repairs too.

Permanent repairs would be carried out once the government sanctions funds for rectifying the damages caused by the rain.

Transport Minister K.N. Nehru had announced that the city would get Rs.7 crore from the Reserve, Equalisation and Incentive Fund for relaying the arterial roads.

Besides, the Corporation has drawn up a major plan to raise a loan-cum-grant of Rs.52 crore for relaying and constructing drains across the city. However, this would be a long-term project.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner has made soil tests mandatory before relaying roads in the city so that the quality of roads was in accordance with the quality of the soil.

Roads would be laid with the required gradient on both sides so as to ensure quick draining of rainwater.
