Free saris, dhotis to be distributed in Karur

Pongal gift for people living below poverty line

KARUR: A total of 5,60,112 persons, including 2,82,293 women, will be given free saris and dhotis ahead of Pongal in the district, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said on Saturday.

Inspecting the sari and dhoti consignments received from Co-optex here, Mr. Venkatesh said the distribution would begin on January 1 and would be completed in 10 days. The consignments had reached the taluk offices at Karur, Aravakurichi, Krishnarayapuram and Kulithalai After scrutiny by Revenue Department officials, they would be routed to the fair price shops.

Village administrative officers would distribute tokens to identified beneficiaries, who could then exchange them for the gift items. All efforts would be made to ensure that all beneficiaries got the free saris and dhotis before January 10.

While in Karur taluk a total of 1,29,225 saris and an equal number of dhotis would be distributed, in Aravakurichi taluk 56,579 sets of saris and dhotis would be disbursed. In Krishnarayapuram taluk, 33,267 saris and 33,207 dhotis would be handed over to people living below poverty line. In Kulithalai taluk, 63,322 saris and 58,806 dhotis would be distributed.

Mr. Venkatesh, along with Revenue Divisional Officer R. Seethalakshmi, inspected the sari and dhoti consignments and checked the seal besides inspecting the list of places and beneficiaries. He directed the officials to ensure that the beneficiaries got the Pongal gift from the State Government without any hassles at their places of stay.
