Tracing a barber’s fortunes

Katha Parayumbol

Malayalam cinema can lay claim to one aspect. A film based on a barber’s poverty-ridden life can become a box-office hit here, provided it is packaged well. Director of ‘Katha Parayumbol’ M. Mohanan has managed to do that.

Barber Balan (Srinivasan), his wife and three children lead a life of penury. Revenue from his barber shop is almost nil. Things take a turn for the better when the shooting of a film begins in the village. Word spreads that Balan and the hero of the film Ashok Raj (Mammootty) were childhood friends.

Now, Balan’s foes turn friends – hoping to invite the superstar to their homes with his help. But, Balan hesitates to meet his friend for fear of being rejected. His feeble attempts to catch Ashok Raj’s attention fail. Soon, the tide turns. Mammootty gives a commendable performance in his guest appearance.
