Naidu backs agitation against alumina refinery

Special Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Saturday called on party leader Sobha Hymavathi and promised that he would provide all help to the agitation against setting up an alumina refinery in S. Kota mandal.

Mr. Naidu could not meet Ms. Hymavathi and 37 others who were arrested at S. Kota for laying siege to the tahsildar’s office as part of the agitation and were released on bail from the Central Jail here on Friday, during his visit to the district.

Ms. Hymavathi said when she told Mr. Babu that she and others were disappointed that they could not meet him, Mr. Naidu regretted that the same and said this happened due to a communication gap.

Later Mr. Naidu called up Ms. Hymavathi again during a press conference she and the arrested persons addressed at Vizianagaram in the presence of party leaders like P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Yedla Ramanamurthy and others, appreciated the struggle being carried out by the farmers and others of S. Kota and wanted the party leaders to extend all support to them.

Most of those released on bail in the S. Kota incident said the condition laid down that they should not move out of the district headquarters (Vizianagaram) had actually brought more trouble to them.

Though they would not comment on the court’s decision, the farmers said they were all daily wage earners working in the fields near their villages and wondered how they could earn their livelihood or take care of their families if they stayed in Vizianagaram.
