National sub-junior TT from tomorrow

CHENNAI: After a gap of three years National sub-junior (U-14 and U-12) table tennis is returning to the city enriched by sponsorship-backing and increased participation level.

With Velammal Education Trust has come forward to be the title-sponsor and the championship to be held from December 24 to 29 will see over 500 players from 31 affiliated units, 75 Technical officials and as many officials.

Briefing presspersons on Saturday, S. Ganesan, President, TNTTA, said it was the faith that the national body (TTFI) had on the State Association that the National championships were regularly allotted to the State. This time prize money to the tune of Rs. 1,38,200 would be given for all categories in the individual competitions up to the quarterfinal level.

Tata Consultancy Services, Union Bank of India and Sri Ramachandra Medical University are the key sponsors while Tristar TT Academy of the player-couple Hari and Pallavi and Sports Promotion Foundation will be organising the Championship under the guidance of TNTTA.

Kiruthika, T. Reethrisha, S. Narasimha Priya. Coaches: R. Ramesh Babu, V. Sureshkumar, Andrew, Sathyamoorthy. Manager: Jayaraman.

Five-wkt win for MGC

MGC ‘A’ scored a five wicket win over MCC in the Madras Gymkhana Club inter-club cricket tournament for the Singaram Trophy.

The scores: MCC 66 in 20 overs lost to MGC ‘A’ 67 for five in 18.5 overs.

AG’s Office posts win

AG’s Office managed to edge TNSP 2-1 in a CFA senior division football league match at the Nehru Stadium on Saturday. Jesus Antony and Muthu scored for the winner while D. Gopalakrishnan scored for TNSP.

Earlier in the first division, TNEB and D.B. Annai Youth played out a 1-1 draw. Parthiban scored for TNEB and Shyju equalised.

Tennis tournament

Krishnan Tennis Centre will conduct the BSNL Junior tennis tournament, a TNTA ranking event, from January 7 to 12. The events are for boys and girls (U-14) singles and doubles.
