Thiruvananthapuram: Consumers need not fear consumer court, which will function like the quasi-judicial body that it was envisaged as, with no formal procedures as in civil courts, president of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission K. R. Udayabhanu has said. Addressing a function organised here by the Consumer Vigilance Centre on Saturday in connection with the National Consumer Rights Day, he said that a good consumer culture could be developed only through the efforts of consumers who were aware of their rights and were willing to fight for it. Consumers themselves should come forward to strengthen consumer courts, where they do not need to rely on lawyers to represent their grievances, Mr. Udayabhanu said. The keynote address on the challenges faced by consumers was delivered by the Director of the Bureau of Indian Standards, R. C. Mathew. Consumer rights awareness classes were led by experts a well as lawyers in the field.
