This Day That Age
Pope Pius XII, broadcasting a Christmas message to the world from his Vatican Palace, on December 22 called on all nations to reduce their armaments “under efficient surveillance”. The 81-year-old Pontiff seated on a damask throne, said reduction of armaments and other measures to ward off war were demanded by divine law in order to give a merited respite to a world which has already suffered too much. The Pope’s message was broadcast from a powerful new Vatican radio transmitter , said to be capable of reaching into the heart of China, and was relayed over ten European national networks.
