Not so funny honey

Now there is a formula for animation films — funny cartoon stuff for the children and super referential pop culture kitsch, for the mamas and papas who brought all the chunnu munnus for the movie.

“Bee Movie” is another anthropomorphic excursion into this familiar territory.

After bugs and ants, it is time for the bees to take centre stage.

There is Barry B. Benson, a fresh graduate of the bee academy, who unlike his nerdy friend, Adam Flayman, wants more out of life than being a drone making honey for the Honex Corporation.

So out he goes into the real world, falls for a human, a feisty florist named Vanessa, realises humans have been stealing honey from bees forever, sues and wins a case against the humans, realises making honey is necessary for flowers to bloom, rescues the last blooms in the world and sets everything right. The voice cast is stellar — from Seinfeld as Barry, Renee Zellwegger as Vanessa to Chris Rock as a mosquito with a unique take on life and Matthew Broderick as Adam.

The colours are bright and happy and the celebrity jokes — Sting, Ray Liotta and David Letterman (they made guest voice appearances) are quite funny — but as mentioned before, a few jokes and eye popping set pieces do not make a super successful movie.
