CHENNAI: Inaugurating the 19th national conference of the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology (IAOMR) here on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. M.G.R. Medical University K. Meer Mustafa Hussein urged the participants to discuss recent advances in the field. He asked them to compile their suggestions in the form of resolutions that could be forwarded to the Government. Organising chairman of the conference Ravi David Austin said the conference was aimed at improving academic standards and clinical excellence. Academics, specialists and postgraduate students participated in the conference. IAOMR secretary D.B. Gandhi Babu said several members of the academy had been contributing both scientifically and financially to the organisation. P. Ramachandra Reddy, former Additional Director of Medical Education, Andhra Pradesh, said the membership of the academy was over 400. Primary researchHighlighting the need for primary research, B.K. Venkataraman, IAOMR founder and former principal of the Oral Medicine and Radiology Government Dental College, Bangalore, said: “In India, oral medicine was introduced by the WHO more than 30 years ago… Though the Dental Council was sceptical in the beginning, it approved the field as a subject of study later. As dentists, we think only about how to treat a particular disease without going into the causation factors.”
