“Parents must instil fresh ideas in children”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Issues relating to the transition period of children and the role of parents and teachers in the all-round development of children were discussed at a seminar held here on Saturday.

S. Anandalakshmy, president, Bala Mandir Research Foundation, suggested that the parents help children by filling their minds with new ideas. This would help to form trust in the parents.

Ms. Anandalakshmy disapproved of parents’ unwillingness to answer questions raised by children.

The word “adolescence” was coined during the Industrial Revolution in Europe. At that time, both men and women got employed in industries, and their wards were left to fend for themselves, she said.

Krishna Iyer, counsellor, Reach Out, said that at present two types of parents could be seen in society. Seasoned parents gave their wards a lot of freedom. The other type was the ordinary parents, who felt that their children should score 99 per cent in the examinations.

Many parents and teachers did not give importance to the potential and capabilities of children, she said. It would be difficult to bring up children in a city, said Veda Zachariah of Sanjeevi Trust, Bangalore.
