The recent statement by the Collector of Anantapur district that he would resign from his job if he did not ensure good results in the ensuing tenth class public examinataion in Anantapur district is indeed inspiring. Officers from the education department are already visiting the schools and conducting meetings with students, teachers and headmasters besides giving suitable suggestions in this respect. The spirit of the collector must percolate to all levels including parents and students. Teachers have a special responsibility as they are the people who are instrumental in bringing about this change.
R Dwarkanatha Rao, Guntakal On profitable roadIt is heartening to note that for the first time RTC has earned profits indicative of its competency vis-À-vis the private sector. This indicates that miracles can happen if people at the helm of affairs do their job sincerely. The new management took it as a challenge and showed positive results. The introduction of new bus services like ‘Palle Velugu’ also helped in increasing the occupancy rate. Apart from this, if they maintain proper timings and run buses on time the percentage of occupancy. Dr.M.Nazeeruddin, Kurnool Curbing corruptionThis is with reference to the news item ‘Be partners in anti-corruption campaign, public told’ (The Hindu, dated 09/12/07). Right from the time the Anantapur District Collector N Sridhar assumed charge, he succeeded in curbing corruption with an iron hand. The efforts undertaken by the Collector are laudable and worth emulating. He had suspended errant employees in several departments and created a sense of fear among dishonest staff. As the Collector rightly pointed out, the amount earmarked for welfare schemes is being wrongly diverted thereby, hampering the progress. This apart, his effort to elevate the district’s position in the SSC examination among the top ten bracket deserves praise. Hope the Collector’s efforts bear fruit and work wonders for the district. G Jagannadh, Anantapur
