Bunkers destroyed, says Colombo

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military on Sunday claimed to have destroyed four LTTE bunkers and killed eight of its cadres ahead of Nagarkovil defences in the north.

For some days now the military has been making claims of steady advancement along the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) in the north. There have been hints from the top quarters in the Mahinda Rajapaksa government that the aim of the forces is to tie down the LTTE in the territory under its control.

TamilNet alleged that soldiers and policemen went amok in Mannar bazaar on Sunday and smashed around 100 pavement shops, beat the petty shop owners, and arrested at least 80 persons.

In another development, the military claimed that four families “braved their way into liberated shores” at Pallemunai, Mannar on Sunday .

“The Tamil civilians were forced to leave their traditional lands at Mulungavil, south of Poonaryn, fearing LTTE reprisal attacks, sources said. Five females and two children were among the refugees who were traumatised and physically weakened in the hour’s long journey along the coastal choppy waters.”
