Indian women 56th

New Delhi: India has dropped one spot to 56th in the latest FIFA world rankings in women’s football.

The drop from India’s best ever ranking has largely to do with the upset defeat to rookies Iran over two legs in the qualifiers for the AFC Women’s Cup. After a hard-fought 3-1 win at Gurgaon, the Indian girls were expected to seal the deal in Tehran but came back 1-4 losers.

Iranian girls had hardly played any international football and were not even included in the FIFA list but the win over India took them to a provisional ranking of 55, one better than India. India is ranked 12th in Asia. — PTI
