Thirty seven relief camps were set up in the district District record 3,420 mm rain from December 12 to 22 Tiruvarur: Samba paddy crop on 73,148 hectares was affected due the recent rain in the district, according to U.Mathivanan, Diary Development Minister. He told presspersons at Tiruvarur on Saturday that out of the affected crops, those on 12,481 hectares were fully damaged, 42,287 hectares were partly damaged and 18,380 hectares suffered damage to the extent of less than fifty per cent. Thirty seven relief camps were set up in the district and 17,759 persons were sheltered in these camps. Two persons and one hundred and thirty two cattle heads died in the district. They include 62 cows, three buffaloes, 19 calves, 45 goats and three bullocks. The district recorded 3,420 mm of rainfall from December 12 to 22. Eighty two houses were fully damaged and 692 partly damaged. Breaches occurred in 33 places. Earlier the Minister held discussions with officials regarding taking up of relief works in the affected areas. The Collector, M. Chandrasekaran, the District Revenue Officer, Maheswari, and others participated.
