64.8 lakh people of 42 lakh families benefit from the programme Works with an estimated Rs. 1,646 cr. taken up generating 17.84 crore mandays HYDERABAD: The State Government has decided to extend the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) to all the mandals across the State from April 1 next year. The programme is presently being implemented in 656 mandals of 13 districts providing job cards to 81 lakh families. Of these, 64.8 lakh people of 42 lakh families got benefit under the programme in which works with an estimated Rs. 1,646 crore were taken up generating 17.84 crore mandays. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who reviewed the progress of welfare schemes with senior officials on Sunday, said the Government would shortly depute a delegation to the Centre to make a presentation on the “success stories”, including the supply of free power, to the Planning Commission. Despite the significant increase in service connections, the Government was able to continue supply of power free of cost to agriculture sector. While the number of connections increased from 23.74 lakh in 2004-05 to 25.27 lakh in 2006-07, power consumption rose from 13,394 million units to 15,640 million units and this was expected to increase by another 14 per cent by the end of the current financial year. The Government, on its part, would provide 1.5 lakh new connections every year to ensure that all the needy farmers get the benefit under the scheme. Rajiv ArogyasriThe officials concerned had been asked to prepare presentation, showcasing the State’s achievements in this regard. The delegation would also make a presentation on the successful implementation of Rajiv Arogyasri, the health insurance scheme for poor, launched in eight districts. 75 hospitals, Government and private, had been roped in under the scheme.
