The fallout of a mega political meet

An Eyesore: Plastic buntings put up by Bahujan Samaj Party on Cubbon Road in Bangalore on Sunday.

BANGALORE: This city labours under weight of improprieties of sorts every time there is a mega political meet. Either it is traffic jams or creating heaps of garbage in the parks and roads of the city.

But the meeting of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Sunday painted the city blue not with paint but with more dangerous substance – plastic.

The party in its enthusiasm to welcome its leader Mayawati had put up buntings, flags and banners everywhere, right from the airport to Palace Ground (about 10 km). The flags and banners are made of acrylic material while the buntings are made of plastic. Plastic leaflets, flags and other publicity material were found strewn around every circle, traffic intersection, and parks all the way up to Palace Ground.

As evening drew, the leaflets cut off from the strings to which they were attached, adding to the city’s pile up of garbage. It was all the more at the usually clean surroundings in Minsk Square, GPO, Raj Bhavan Road, parts of Cubbon Road, Queen’s Road, Basaveshwara Circle, and Palace Road. Basappa Marappa, a party worker, said that the party had spent a fortune on the publicity material.
