Good business sense
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: According to the 2001 Census of disabled people, the first of its kind, there were 22 million disabled persons in India, a figure disputed by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment of Disabled People which estimated it at 70 million. A survey conducted by NCPEDP in 1999 estimated the average rate of employment of disabled in the public sector is 0.54 per cent and 0.28 in the private sector.
In the case of multinational corporations, which follow strict policies in their parent countries, the rate is even more abysmal — 0.05 per cent.
The World Bank report commends companies such as Titan, where 4 per cent of the workforce comprises disabled persons. The report uses the case to show how it makes good business sense.
