Time to be cautious

Sale of liquor multiplies several-fold from now to the week following New Year’s day. It also increases chances of drunken brawl, accidents and atrocities on women and children by inebriated persons.

It is quite astonishing to find that people get drunk in the name of celebration. People welcome the New Year’s first morning with a hangover from midnight parties. Many get drunk on the last night of the year with the resolution never to drink again in the New Year. But this resolution made in an inebriated state is never kept. As these people are not going to change themselves, others should remain careful during this festive period to avoid accidents and brawl caused by these persons floating on high ‘spirits’.

Poor show

The Orissa Cricket Academy recently registered its dissatisfaction with BCCI for poor umpiring that saw last five Orissa wickets tumbling in just 25 runs in the super league match plate.

How could the team, which scored above 350 runs in the first innings and did not face any problem from pitch, fare badly in the second innings? The BCCI must analyse the video footage that OCA had asked for and make umpires accountable for their decisions.

This is the single reason why our country did not produce a single elite umpire recognised by ICC after Venkataraghaban.

Umpires must keep in mind that they are officiating a match but not taking sides of any team.

The OCA’s allegation should also be taken up seriously. The sports body had never brought accusation before. This is the first time that the body seems to be hurt by poor umpiring.

Serving people

As per reports Chireenjeeve, the popular cine actor of Andhra Pradesh, is planning to enter active politics. Previously in south India many popular actors entered politics and ruled their respective states for many terms.

This has now become a practice for many popular actors to enter politics at the fag end of their film career and serve people.

NTR, MGR, Jayalalitha, Shivaji Ganeshan, Amitabh, Rajesh Khanna so on and so forth.

But one thing is clear: things will not change much as these film actors are not having any magic stick to solve all the problems once and for all. If they continue in their own field, they will be more effective and praiseworthy.

Impact of mining

The Centre for Science and Environment has recently published a research book on mineral industry and its likely adverse impact on society as a whole. Director of CSE Sunita Narain had dared the mining industry to challenge its report.

There are so many organisations involved in the activity of mining. But nobody concerned has come out to react to the findings. The State Government should have learnt a lesson from the book.

First it should stop the rhetoric that Orissa is a mineral-rich state. It is well established that the land with more minerals has poorer people. It is really a pathetic scenario.
