BSNL customers are ‘served bills’ sans service

Staff Reporter

Their landline connections snapped during road-widening

Customers’ woes increase when cables are stolen

Official says restoration work is in progress

BERHAMPUR: A large number of landline subscribers of the BSNL near Ambapua area of the city have been without connection since last four months.

But they are getting regular bills for the rental of their telephones although they are unable to use the telephones for no fault of theirs. The landline subscribers of Ambapua, Bimanagar, Saradhabali, Gayatri Nagar and Sana Kusasthali are suffering this problem.

‘Repeated complaints’

“Despite our repeated complains the BSNL authorities are not in a position to make these dead telephones operational as they are following the long official process of tender and contracts to rectify the problem,” said Prakash Panigrahy, a resident of Gayatri Nagar.

The landline connections of these areas snapped on Aug 12 when digging work was taken up to widen the NH 217 that passes through the area. The underground BSNL cables were snapped during digging for the road widening work.

According to S.K.Sahu, SDO of the BSNL for the area, their woes increased when some miscreants stole large portions of underground cable from the same area.

According to him around 270 landline connections in the area became dead.

Mr Sahu added that the customers would not be charged for the months when they were not getting any service. But the finance section of the BSNL Berhampur division is continuing sending bills to customers.

Mr Sahu said they were making efforts to restore all landline connections in the area by laying new cables. But he accepted that it would take some more time.

He however claimed that they had already resumed connections to some phones of the area, which had become dead in August.
