12 Hizb militants surrender in J & K

Luv Puri

Ramban: Twelve members of the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen surrendered before Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad here on Sunday. Mr. Azad said the surrender was the result of confidence-building measures taken jointly by the Union and State governments to restore peace in the State.

Of the 12, 10 were operating at Gool in Ramban district and two in the Kellar area of Pulwama district.

The development is seen as a severe setback to the militant outfit and bound to instil confidence in the minds of people.

Of the 12, Manzoor Ahmad alias Furqan Ali, Mumtaz Ali alias Asif Rahi and Abdul Qayoom alias Imran Khan were the most dreaded militants active for more than a decade. They served as a main source of motivation in the cadres, keeping the militant activities simmering in the area between Banihal and Reasi. Asif and Furqan were close associates of Billu Gujjar, most dreaded militant of the Gool area, after whose elimination Asif substituted him and kept his network active in the area.

The arms and ammunition surrendered by the militants included 10 AK-56 rifles, two SLRs, 26 AK magazines, two SLR magazines, seven grenades and two wireless sets.
