Dynastic rule?

Former Union minister P. Upendra recently expressed willingness to contest the 2009 elections if the party high command directs him to do so. In an indirect reference to the remarks of Vijayawada MP and his son in-law Lagadapati Rajagopal that he would contest again from Vijayawada, Upendra said that it was for the AICC to take a decision in this regard. It is certainly a dynastic rule whether Upendra contests or Rajagopal contests. The party should take a note of this before giving tickets.

Mechanisation at whose cost?

The civic authorities are planning to introduce JCB robots for sanitation in Guntur city. The officials are planning to switch over mechanisation of sanitation drive as 350 tonnes of garbage is being generated in 52 divisions in the city. The officials said the robot can complete the work of 50 persons in an hour and sweeps five km of road with three litres of diesel. The civic authorities should be commended for their novel idea. But, what about the hundreds of people who will lose their jobs?

Small traders’ woes

The State Government had issued GO 517 that makes its mandatory to submit quarterly returns to commercial taxes department. The officials are harassing small traders in the name of GO. The petty and small traders complain that it was not possible for them to submit the purchase and sale returns for every three months, as they cannot employ clerks. They have threatened to take up agitation path if the government doesn’t respond immediately. The government should review the problem and take appropriate decision.

Congress tense over Chiru’s entry

The Cabinet recently approved a proposal to constitute a committee to study inclusion of Kapu, Telaga, Balija, Ontari, and 16 other castes in BCs. The Kapus and other related castes be included in BCs has been a long-pending demand from these communities. The Congress, in the run up to the 2004 elections, promised them BC status, but it has not got around it so far. The Government had approved the proposal to constitute a committee only with a fear that Chiranjeevi would enter into politics. Media reports also say that the Government was keeping a tab on movements of the actor. Certainly the Congress is tensed over actor’s reported entry into politics.

Give a chance to budding talent

Eminent personalities in music field are conducting Thyagaraja Aradhana music festival in Vijayawada for the last 10 years in January. It is really a feast for music lovers. Many up coming and budding artistes from across the globe country participate with devotion. The committee and the senior artistes must consider to give a chance to new and budding artistes. For various reasons, the young artistes were not approaching the committee seeking an opportunity to give a performance. It is high time to consider encouragement of local talent also.
