Steps initiated to declare Vellore a heritage centre

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Steps are being taken to declare Vellore a heritage centre, according to Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi.

Inaugurating the government exhibition at the fort grounds here on Sunday, Mr. Ilamvazhuthi said once Vellore was declared a heritage centre, it would get Rs.50 lakh towards development of tourist infrastructure. This would answer persistent demands being made for apportioning a part of the revenue earned through the government exhibition in Vellore to the Vellore Municipality.

Replying to the request made by Vellore MLA C. Gnanasekharan for allocating a portion of the revenue to the Vellore Municipality, he said that since the fort grounds, where the exhibition was being held, belonged to the Archaeological Survey of India, a share of the revenue earnings from the exhibition had to be given to the ASI.
