Elephants return to human habitations
Staff Reporter
COIMBATORE: The herd of elephants that killed a forest watcher and injured three people 10 days ago near Podanur and Sulur were spotted near human habitations at Chettipalayam near Podanur on Sunday.
After it struck terror among the people for more than four days last time, the herd of a male, two females and a calf, was driven back to the jungles with the help of two “kumkis” (domesticated elephants) brought from the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary at Top Slip.
A couple of days ago, the herd tried to re-enter human habitations twice. This was foiled by the public and police and Forest Department personnel. On Sunday, it succeeded in entering these habitations, travelling 16 km from the forests and taking the same route as it did last time.
The elephants crossed a bypass road and a rail line before taking shelter in an area full of thorny bushes at Chettipalayam.
R. Kannan, Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Circle, and District Forest Officer I. Anwardeen mobilised tribal animal trackers and an anti-depredation squad to deal with the situation. Besides, two “kumkis” from the sanctuary were on their way to drive again the herd back into the jungles.
