Maharashtra girls, AP boys triumph

NELLORE: Andhra Pradesh boys won the Narang Cup defeating defending champion Air-India 2-0, while Maharashtra girls scored a 2-1 victory over host AP to clinch the Shafi Qureshi Cup in the 32nd junior National badminton championship at the A.C. Subba Reddy Sports Complex here on Sunday.

Junior India international Sikki Reddy exploited the sluggish movements of Maharasthra’s Kadambari with her deft half-smashes and subtle drop shot to win the first singles 21-15, 21-17.

Undeterred, Maharashtra pair of Pradnya Gadre and Sweta Khelkar took advantage of the feeble returns of J. Shurthi and targeted her with their incisive smashes to win the doubles 11-21, 21-12, 21-16.

Mudra clinches decider

In the decider, which lasted 27 minutes, Maharashtra’s Mudra Dahinje outplayed a tried Shruthi who committed a series of unforced errors.

In the boys’ final, Andhra Pradesh’s Guru Sai Dutt took less than 30 minutes to outplay Air-India’s Arun Nadaluri to register the first win 21-12, 21-14 and later partnering A. Tarun, downed the rival pair of N. Arun and Aditya Elangao 21-18, 21-15 to enable his team emerge victorious.

AP’s Guru Sai Dutt and Maharashtra’s Mudra are the top seeds in the boys and girls segments for the Open singles events, which will conclude on December 27.

Boys: Andhra Pradesh bt Air-India 2-0 (Guru Sai Dutt bt Arun Nadaluri 21-12, 21-14; Guru Sai Dutt / A. Tarun bt N. Arun / Aditya Elango 21-18, 21-15).

Girls: Maharashtra bt AP 2-1 (C. Kadambari lost to Sikki Reddy 15-21, 17-21; Pradnya Gadre / Sweta Khelkar bt Sikki Reddy / J. Shruthi 11-21, 21-12, 21-16; Mudra Dahinje bt J. Shruthi 21-16, 21-18).
