Table Tennis
CHENNAI: The stage is all set for the start of the Vellammal-National sub-junior table tennis championship at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on Monday. Sixteen STIGA tables, being used here for the first time, have been placed in the hall and according to N. Ganeshan, Chief Referee, 128 matches in the sub-junior and cadet sections in the inter-State phase will be gone through on the opening day. Nittaku balls will be used in the championship. The chief referee believes that the matches will not go beyond 8.30 p.m. which in itself will be a big solace for the young children. The initial two days will be entirely taken up for the league phase. There are eight groups in each category. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knock-out phase. If the rankings of players are anything to go by, then in the sub-junior section, North Bengal looks to have an advantage over holder PSPB, while in the girls’ section, Maharashtra has an edge over North Bengal. Arnab Adhikari, Avik Das and Rajib Sarkar are the top three ranked players in the North Bengal ranks. In Maharashtra, the top two rankers, Mallika Bandarkar and Charvi Kawle, are there to give the State a boost. The CEO of Velammal Educational Trust, M.V.M. Vemurugan, will declare the championship open.
