The underpass has been completed at a cost of Rs. 17.46 crore The work was taken up in April 2006 to ease traffic congestion BANGALORE: The Ramamurthynagar underpass, constructed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), on the Outer Ring Road will be thrown open to the public by Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Monday. The long-delayed underpass has been completed at a cost of Rs. 17.46 crore. The work on this underpass connecting Krishnarajapuram to Hebbal was taken up in April 2006 in an attempt to ease congestion at the junction of Outer Ring Road and Banaswadi-Ramamurthy Nagar Road. Work on the 340-metre underpass was stalled for a few months because of problems with land acquisition. The BDA needed about 360 sq ft of land on either side of Ramamurthy Nagar Main Road but the Railways did not part with the land. “The BDA had to change its plans because we did not get the land we needed. This led to a delay in the completion of the project,” Chief Engineer, BDA, P.N. Nayak said. He said that the work went on at a slow pace because the area witnesses constant vehicular traffic, especially a large number of trucks, throughout the day. A release said that the volume of traffic at the junction of Outer Ring Road and Banaswadi-Ramamurthy Nagar Road was increasing and leading to heavy traffic congestion. In the light of this, the BDA took up the construction of the underpass Outer Ring Road at this junction, and it took nearly eighteen-and-a-half months to complete the work. SitesThe function on Monday will witness 28 veteran freedom fighters receiving site allotment letters. The BDA has allotted sites measuring 30 x 40 sites in B.T.M. Layout 6th Stage to these freedom fighters who are in the 80-85 age group. The BDA had earlier distributed 19 sites to veteran freedom fighters at Happy Valley Layout in Banashankari 5th Stage.
