Ex-BDA chairman K.K. Murthy dead

Bangalore: The former chairman of the Bangalore Development Authority and Congress leader K.K. Murthy died on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 74.

Mr. Murthy had slipped into coma after suffering a brain haemorrhage sometime ago. He leaves behind wife and a son.

As chairman of the BDA during the Government of the late R. Gundu Rao, Mr Murthy was instrumental in forming several residential layouts.

He evolved a novel method in land acquisition wherein the land owners were given one site for every acre of land acquired apart from compensation.

Mr. Murthy brought in expertise from Singapore in developing Bangalore. As president of the Academy of Music, Mr. Murthy was instrumental in the construction of the Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

He had also played a key role in finalising the agreement between the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), which enabled the formation of the first-ever coalition Government in Karnataka.

Condoled

President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee M. Mallikarjun Kharge and the former Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh, who were long time associates of Mr. Murthy, have condoled the death.
