‘Gujarat results will not affect State Congress’

Special Correspondent

Party ready for elections in the State any time

Second leg of Janandolana campaign from December 27

BANGALORE: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge has said that the results of the elections to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly will have no impact on the Congress in Karnataka.

He told presspersons here on Sunday that though the Congress could not get majority, it had improved its performance in Gujarat. The party had gained 12 seats more than in the last elections at the expense of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he said.

Mr. Kharge said the political situation in Karnataka and Gujarat could not be compared and so were the demographic features of the two States. “The Congress is ready for elections in the State any time and the party will not ask the Election Commission to hold elections at a time when it suits it. But the party believes in keeping itself ready for any eventuality when it comes to preparing for elections,” he said.

Stating that the Congress would embark on the second leg of Janandolana tour of the State, Mr. Kharge said the programme would commence from Bijapur on December 27. The campaign will cover Bagalkot on December 28, Koppal on December 29, Bellary on December 30 and Gadag on December 31. The Congress had received a good response during the first round of Janandolana campaign held in Bangalore city and Bangalore rural district, Bidar, Gulburga and Raichur, he claimed.

On the Bahujan Samaj Party in Karnataka, Mr. Kharge said: “The BSP has no base in Karnataka and it has no issue to focus.”
