Rappelling to confidence

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: “At first I was scared. But after successfully climbing down from the rocky boulder,

“I became not only confident but was also happy with rappelling. Now I want to do it repeatedly,” said Mounika (10) who was among the 40 children to participate in the adventure sports organised by the National Organisation for Promotion of Adventure Sports and Nature (NOPASANA) to celebrate adventure day near the Bellary Fort on Monday.

These many children, wearing helmets and gloves, rappelled from a nearly 15-ft rocky boulder with ease amid cheering from their friends. Almost all of them were participating in the event for the first time.

“We did not know that this sport was interesting. I used to play the regular games and now I wish that our school was located near the fort so that we could do rappelling regularly,” said Chandu, another girl.

Colonel Padhya, Commanding Officer of NCC Group Headquarters here, who inaugurated the programme said that participating in adventure sports instilled confidence and courage in children and lauded the efforts being made by NOPASANA which organised the event from the top of the fort built on the State’s second biggest single rock.

“We decided to celebrate adventure day today because of the mid-term examinations. From next year we have plans to organise more activities in addition to rappelling,” Shakeeb of NOPASANA told The Hindu.
