dated December 25, 1957: Rephrasing of Plan

The Finance Minister, Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari told Mr. Bhupesh Gupta in the Rajya Sabha, on December 23, that for the time being, the Planning Commission was proceeding on the basis of an investment of Rs. 4,800 crores in the public sector for the Second Plan.

Mr. Krishnamachari indicated that the margin of profits in the processing industries, left to the private sector under the Plan, was much higher than in the basic industries, whether these were in the public or the private sector.

Replying to questions about the rephrasing of the Plan now in progress, Mr. Krishnamachari said that it would be possible to give some precise indication only in the budget session.

Talks were at present in progress with the State Governments about the size of their plans for 1958-59 and the Central assistance to be given.
