CHENNAI: Christmas is of great significance in today’s world. Announcing the birth of Jesus Christ to shepherds keeping watch over their flock in the fields by night, the Angel said, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to the world to save mankind from sin. He came to heal humanity, to make us free from bad habits, conflicts, wars, and to cure us of greed, lust, pride, jealousy, suspicion and hatred, to give us love and happiness. For this he had to suffer death on the cross. But he rose again triumphantly to give us a new life and to show us that death is not the final word in history. He came to the world in order to teach us the path of love, the lesson of forgiveness. He is the supreme teacher of love and human brotherhood. Christ came to the world to set us free from the powers of death and destruction. We have to realise the human potential for justice and peace. God was pleased to give His Son for the salvation and comfort of the world. It is for our happiness, for our good cheer, for our vitality and enjoyment that God became human. It is for our fellowship that Jesus gave all of himself for our delight, to meet our needs, to celebrate with him and all people in the land of the living. The essential thing about Christmas is not only that took place in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, but the fact that Christ is born and the love of God is revealed in this world today, and on every day of the year. God has revealed Himself to His creation. He has come to us incarnate to show us the way. Christ comes to show how everything in this world is meant to be good, perfect, beautiful and holy. Christmas gives us the message of peace. We have to be recipients of that peace that Jesus came to offer us, and also become in turn instruments of peace. The message of Christmas is not only of peace but also of hope. It gives the message of love also. Christmas is the manifestation of God’s supreme love for mankind. Jesus Christ is love incarnate. Love is the best of God’s gifts to His people. The life of Jesus Christ is an example of His love for all mankind. E.J. John, Kottayam
