COIMBATORE: In a move to help exporters, the State Government is improving resources at the District Industries’ Centres (DICs). Commissioner of Industries and Commerce of the Tamil Nadu Government Rajeev Ranjan told presspersons here on Monday that “We are also discussing a package for exporters.” The DICs already had export guidance cells. These would be transformed into district export promotion cells. A trade information portal with links to all the DICs would also be established. The fourth census of micro, small and medium enterprises would be taken up early next year. This would be a comprehensive survey and would be sponsored by the Central Government. Earlier, at the valedictory of the MSME 2007 Expo, he said that Tamil Nadu currently had 5.3 lakh micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSME). This was a vibrant sector in the State constituting 40 per cent of the total output of the manufacturing sector and over 35 per cent of exports. Only the MSME sector could contribute for both – accelerated growth and employment generation. “We have to ensure the competitiveness of these units” as they faced increasing competition with globalisation and reduction in tariff barriers. The State Government was expected to release the industrial policy for these units next month and it would address issues such as backward block development and raw material. “We have formulated a scheme to upgrade skills of the workers,” he added.
